✦ Scottie's Take

Why the ʻOhana Program Works for Island Families

The Hawaiʻi Problem

Most points content is built for mainland travelers flying from hub cities. We're flying transpacific from HNL, OGG, or KOA — the strategy is completely different.

Transfer Partners Matter Here

The right cards for Hawaiʻi families are the ones with ANA, JAL, and Hawaiian Airlines as transfer partners — not generic cashback that ignores transpacific routes.

Local Spending, Local Strategy

Safeway, Costco, local dining — your daily spending here is different. The right card strategy should reflect island life, not assume you're commuting in New York.

Always Free for You

HRT may earn a commission when you're approved through our links. You pay nothing extra. Same model as every major points site — but with a local guide who knows your routes.

Educational content only. Not financial advice. All card guidance is based on general travel patterns for Hawaiʻi residents. Your individual situation, creditworthiness, and financial goals should guide all decisions. Scottie Kobayashi is not a licensed financial advisor.

"Seven years ago, we only used Hawaiian miles for occasional flights. After working with Scottie, we've earned over 1.4 million points and haven't paid for flights, hotels, or car rentals in over 4 years — just the taxes. We pay our cards off monthly, credit scores both over 800."

Common Questions

ʻOhana Program FAQ

Is the ʻOhana Program really free?
Yes — there is no fee to join, no subscription, and no catch. Hawaii Reward Travel is compensated through credit card affiliate links if you choose to apply for a card we discuss. You pay nothing extra, and the welcome bonus you receive is the same as if you had applied directly with the bank. You're never required or pressured to apply for any specific card.
Do I need great credit to benefit from this?
Most credit card welcome offers we discuss are designed for people with good to excellent credit (typically 700+ FICO). On your strategy call, Scottie talks through your situation honestly — if your credit isn't there yet, the conversation focuses on what you can do to build toward it. Approval for any card is at the sole discretion of the issuing bank.
Will applying for cards hurt my credit score?
Each new credit card application typically results in a hard inquiry, which can temporarily lower your score by a few points. However, opening new cards also increases your total available credit, which can improve your utilization ratio — often a net positive for your score over time when cards are used responsibly and paid in full each month. This is general educational information, not financial advice. Your individual results depend on your overall credit profile.
How is HRT different from The Points Guy or NerdWallet?
Mainland points sites are written for travelers flying out of hub cities like NYC, LA, or Chicago. The ʻOhana Program is specifically built for Hawaiʻi residents — flights from HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH, and ITO; transfer partners that actually serve transpacific routes (ANA, JAL, Hawaiian Airlines); and spending strategies that match life on the islands. You also get 1-on-1 coaching from Scottie, not just published articles.
How long until I can book a free trip?
It depends on your starting point, your spending, and which welcome offers you're working toward. Some members earn enough for a roundtrip mainland flight within a few months; international premium-cabin redemptions usually take longer. Individual results vary significantly — Scottie sets realistic expectations on your strategy call based on your specific situation.
What happens on the free strategy call?
It's a real 1-on-1 conversation — not a sales pitch. Scottie asks about where you'd like to travel, your current cards, your monthly spending patterns, and your credit comfort level. From there, he walks through which cards might be a good fit, in what order, and why. You leave with a starting plan. You're never pressured to apply for anything.
Do I have to apply for cards through your links?
No. You're free to apply directly with the bank, through another publisher, or not at all. Using HRT's affiliate links is how the program stays free for members and how Scottie is able to coach 1-on-1 — but it's never required.
Is this financial advice?
No. Scottie Kobayashi is not a licensed financial advisor, and nothing in the ʻOhana Program constitutes financial, legal, or tax advice. All content is educational. Decisions about credit cards, debt, and spending are yours alone — and should always factor in your full financial picture and goals.
